Orthodontic Treatment in Fairfax, VA

At the office of Mark C. Carl, DDS, our mission is to help each of our patients develop and maintain a beautiful, healthy smile. We're proud to offer a wide range of treatments and procedures designed to keep your teeth healthy and strong, and we're excited to also offer orthodontic treatment to our patients. Orthodontics uses highly advanced tools and technologies to move the teeth and make permanent changes to the alignment of the teeth and jaws - giving you a beautiful, straight smile.

Getting a Head Start on Treatment

Orthodontic treatment helps you achieve a healthy smile that lasts your whole life, but sometimes, that process needs to start early. Just how early? In keeping with the American Association of Orthodontists, we recommend that parents bring their children in for an initial orthodontic evaluation at age 7. By this age, the back bite is established, so we can spot any problems that currently exist or may develop down the road. We probably won't decide to start treatment this early, but evaluating at this age lets us plan for the ideal time to start treatment, and some conditions (like crowding or underbite) are best treated with early orthodontic care.

Orthodontic Treatment Options

We're proud to offer a variety of high quality, convenient orthodontic treatment options. While braces used to be large, clunky strips of metal that were uncomfortable and unsightly to wear, modern braces are slimmer, lighter, and more attractive than ever, and advances in orthodontic technology now mean we can treat you with special forms of braces or treatment alternatives that do away with metal entirely. Our treatments include:

Metal Braces

metal braces

This is what most people think of when they hear the word "braces." Composed of metal brackets cemented to the teeth and a thin, springy archwire running through them, metal braces offer a reliable, durable, and cost-effective solution for a great smile.

Self-Ligating Braces

These are made of metal and work the same as traditional braces but don't require the use of elastic ties to attach the archwire to the brackets. The brackets can slide along the archwire, allowing for more mobility and speeding up overall treatment time.

Clear (Ceramic) Braces

These use the same basic components as traditional braces, but the brackets are made from a clear ceramic material that blends in with teeth. They're more aesthetically appealing than traditional braces, but they're also slightly more fragile.

Invisalign

invisalign

Invisalign does away with metal brackets and wires entirely, instead using a series of clear, removable plastic trays called aligners to straighten teeth. The aligners are virtually invisible when worn and can be popped in and out to eat, drink, brush, and floss, so almost no one will know you're straightening your teeth and you can still enjoy your favorite foods!

Tips for Speeding Up Orthodontic Treatment

During treatment, we'll work hard to make sure your treatment course is as fast and convenient as possible - but there are a few things you can do to make sure your treatment goes smoothly.

  • Oral Hygiene: Consistent, diligent oral hygiene is critical to successful treatment. You'll need to brush your teeth at least four times daily: after every meal and once before bed. Additionally, you'll have to floss daily, which will require the use of a floss threader.
  • Watch What You Eat: While wearing braces, you'll have to avoid foods that are hard, sticky, or filled with sugar. These foods can damage brackets, get stuck in wires, and rot your teeth - all of which will cause treatment delays!
  • Wear Your Aligners: If you're wearing Invisalign, you'll have to be mindful that while the aligners are removable, they only work when they're in your mouth. You'll need to wear the aligners 22 hours a day, removing them only to eat, drink, brush, and floss. Taking them out any more than necessary will slow down your treatment.

Dr. Carl will always be there to guide you through the treatment process, and answer all the questions you may have.
